We wish people could see everything we do that never makes it onto the final bill. The wounds stitched up for free, the medication we don’t charge for, the extra x-ray or ultrasound scan. The additional time spent in surgery that nobody keeps track of, the IV fluids set up at no cost and the staff who stay long after their shift ends just to make sure their patient is comfortable. It’s not that these things don’t cost anything. It’s that sometimes you’re standing there looking at an animal, and helping them feels so much more important than counting every cent. We know veterinary care costs money, we know budgets are real, and we know not every family can say yes to every recommendation or treatment plan. That’s why, every day, in consultation rooms, treatment areas and theatres, there are conversations about how we can do the very best we can with what’s available. How we can make a plan work to help the animal in front of us. There is so much thought, care and effort behind every case that people never see. And while an invoice can show the cost of treatment, it will never show all the little things that happened behind the scenes to get that patient the care they needed.
