Canine Parvo Virus: What Every Dog Owner Should Know

Canine parvovirus, commonly called parvo or “katgriep” in Afrikaans, is one of the most serious and highly contagious viral diseases…

It is thought that Louis Pasteur said this about d It is thought that Louis Pasteur said this about disease and how protecting animal health protects all of us. But we believe it goes much deeper than that.

It’s the dog that got someone out of bed on mornings they didn’t want to leave the house, it’s the farmer who didn’t lose everything because their herd pulled through, and the cat curled up on a chest during the worst week of someone’s life.
It’s us, standing next to a theatre table at 2am, because someone’s pet needed us to be there.

Animals heal parts of us that nothing else reaches. Not therapy, not time, not anything any doctor can prescribe.

So yes, veterinary medicine does cure humankind. Not just because we keep disease off your dinner table, but because we keep something in you alive that the world tries very hard to take sometimes.

If you’re new here, it’s time you met Springroll a If you’re new here, it’s time you met Springroll and Nori. Our bottle baby foster fails, our resident skabengas and the definition of “never let them know your next move.”

Between the two of them, they’ve caused enough drama to make “haibo” part of our daily vocabulary, enough grey hairs to qualify for a pensioner’s discount, and enough laughs to make it all worth it.

Nori once ate so many blanket bits she needed surgery. Springroll balega’ed through at least four of her nine lives before she was even a year old.

They take their emotional support duties very seriously, firmly believe every visitor has arrived specifically to see them, and are convinced that every dog wants to be their friend.

Truthfully, they’re a huge part of the Vet House family. They’ve comforted nervous patients and pet owners, charmed countless children, and made this place feel a little more like home.

Though some days, after watching their decision-making process unfold in real time, we do wonder if they’re the ones in need of emotional support…

Anyway, if you’ve ever walked into Vet House and thought, “Who’s in charge here?” ... it’s these two.
We’re just the staff.

@teganonshift made a video recently that really hi @teganonshift made a video recently that really hit us in the feels, and we couldn’t agree more.

We wish people could see everything we do that never makes it onto the final bill.
The wounds stitched up for free, the medication we don’t charge for, the extra x-ray or ultrasound scan. The additional time spent in surgery that nobody keeps track of, the IV fluids set up at no cost and the staff who stay long after their shift ends just to make sure their patient is comfortable.

It’s not that these things don’t cost anything.
It’s that sometimes you’re standing there looking at an animal, and helping them feels so much more important than counting every cent.

We know veterinary care costs money, we know budgets are real, and we know not every family can say yes to every recommendation or treatment plan.

That’s why, every day, in consultation rooms, treatment areas and theatres, there are conversations about how we can do the very best we can with what’s available. How we can make a plan work to help the animal in front of us.

There is so much thought, care and effort behind every case that people never see.

And while an invoice can show the cost of treatment, it will never show all the little things that happened behind the scenes to get that patient the care they needed.

Tyler and Anmari are reporting to different branches these days, so we decided to ask them to show us how different their days are. 🫶🏻
