We recently treated a patient with one of the most We recently treated a patient with one of the most severe cases of ehrlichiosis we’ve seen. He also had babesiosis (biliary).

Babesiosis destroys red blood cells, potentially causing severe anaemia, jaundice and organ damage.
Ehrlichiosis affects white blood cells and can cause dangerously low platelet counts, bleeding, anaemia and, in chronic cases, bone marrow damage and organ complications.

Yes, dogs can have both.
Together, these infections can cause serious, potentially life-threatening complications.

This little guy has since gone home and is doing very well!

But there’s something else we need to talk about. PLEASE DON’T TREAT BILIARY AT HOME.

We know it’s tempting. You’ve seen it before, recognise the signs and want to help your dog quickly.

But not every sick dog has biliary, and many diseases share similar symptoms. Guessing the diagnosis or giving the wrong dose of medication can have devastating consequences.

Certain biliary treatments can cause severe toxicity when overdosed, leading to serious organ damage. Sadly, many dogs don’t make it.

If your dog is lethargic, off their food, feverish, pale, weak, jaundiced or passing dark urine, seek veterinary attention urgently. Don’t wait for things to get worse or medicate without veterinary guidance.

Keep your dog’s tick control up to date, even in winter, and speak to your vet about the best prevention options.

Your vet is a doctor and a human being. In that or Your vet is a doctor and a human being. In that order, at the very same time.

Veterinary medicine is a strange profession. People trust us with the lives of the animals they love most. They come to us scared, desperate and looking for answers. Sometimes, they ask us to fix things that can’t be fixed or make decisions nobody should ever have to make.
And we understand that.

We understand that when your animal is sick, you’re scared. When you’re waiting for answers, you’re frustrated. Sometimes, you’ve had the worst day before you even walk through our doors.

We make room for all of that in our clinic.

But there’s a difference between being upset and being abusive. Your vet is not an emotional punching bag.
They’re not just scrubs, a stethoscope and a medical degree. They’re a person with their own pressures, difficult days and lives outside the clinic. Someone who might have just finished a long shift, missed dinner with their family or been woken in the middle of the night to help your animal.
And they still showed up.

That doesn’t mean every experience with a veterinary practice will be perfect. We get things wrong and communication can fall short. You have every right to ask questions, raise concerns and expect accountability when things don’t go as they should.
But you can hold someone accountable without stripping them of their dignity.

You can be angry without being cruel, you can demand answers without swearing at someone, and you can have a terrible day without making it someone else’s punishment.

The person trying to help your animal is not the enemy. They’re a human being doing a job that asks an extraordinary amount of them.
Veterinary medicine is hard enough without having to brace yourself for being treated as though you’re less than human.

So the next time you’re frustrated with your vet, take a breath. Ask the difficult questions, expect good care and speak up when something isn’t right.

But remember the person standing in front of you. Compassion can’t be a one-way street.

We ask vets to show up with patience, empathy and compassion, even on their hardest days.
It’s not unreasonable to ask the same in return.
✨ Diwali is around the corner! ✨ While we look for ✨ Diwali is around the corner! ✨
While we look forward to the lights and celebrations, it can be a stressful time for our pets. 💥🐶🐱

If your pet struggles with fireworks or loud noises, now is the time to start preparing.
🐾 Remember - Over-the-counter calming products need to be started at least 1–2 weeks before the festivities to be effective! 💊
This means the absolute latest you should start is 29 October. 😬

Chat to us about the best options for your pet, so they can enjoy a calmer, safer Diwali too. 🩵

🩺 Please note - if your pet needs a scheduled prescription-only medication, they must be examined by a veterinarian.
